UPIKE appoints first Dean of College of Dental Health

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – On behalf of the Pikeville University Board of Trustees, President Burton Webb, Ph.D., announced the appointment of Pamela Sparks-Stein, DMD, MPH, as Dean of the UPIKE College of Dental Health.

Sparks-Stein comes to UPIKE from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry, where she is division chief of dental public health.

Prior to her roles in education, Dr. Sparks-Stein worked in private practice in the Commonwealth for 13 years, where she developed her passion for dental education and public health.

“I am a public health dentist and my heart is passionate about helping vulnerable and underserved populations,” Sparks-Stein said. “My years of working with grants and projects in Eastern Kentucky have shown me that there are so many wonderful partners out there who are willing to help, making this a great place to forge partnerships that will allow us to make a real impact in central Appalachia.”

Sparks-Stein received her doctorate in dentistry and her master’s degree in public health from the University of Kentucky.

Family is very important to the new dean. His daughter Lauren Hoagland and her husband Gordy, of Louisville, have two sons, ages one and three. His son John Stein married Michelle Caudill of Hindman, and the two are expecting their first child in April. They are all very close and live close to each other in Lexington.
